How to Reach:
  • By Air: The nearest airport is Shillong Airport (Umroi), about 30 km from Shillong, but it has limited connectivity. The more convenient option is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati (Assam), around 120 km from Shillong, with regular flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and other major cities.
  • By Road: Meghalaya is well connected by road. You can take scenic drives from Guwahati to Shillong (approx. 3 hours), with options of taxis, buses, or self-drive.
  • By Train: Meghalaya doesn’t have a direct railway station. The nearest major railhead is Guwahati Railway Station, around 100 km from Shillong. From there, you can hire a cab or take a shared taxi.
  • Best Time to Visit:
    October to April (Winter–Spring) Pleasant climate, best for sightseeing, trekking, and adventure activities.
    May to September (Monsoon) Perfect to experience Meghalaya’s famous waterfalls, misty hills, and the greenest landscapes. However, heavy rains may cause delays in travel.
  • Places to Visit: Shillong: Ward’s Lake, Shillong Peak, Elephant Falls, Umiam Lake, Police Bazaar.
    Cherrapunji (Sohra): Nohkalikai Falls, Seven Sisters Falls, Mawsmai Caves, Living Root Bridges.

Day-Wise Itinerary

When you get to Guwahati Airport/Railway Station, your journey across Meghalaya officially begins. Travel to Shillong, also known as the "Scotland of the East," across picturesque hills. Visit the stunning Umiam Lake (Barapani) on the way for a pleasant boat ride. Explore the Shillong markets in the evening and take in the refreshing mountain atmosphere. Stay the night in Shillong.

After breakfast, spend the entire day exploring Shillong. Take in the expansive views from Shillong Peak, the beautiful Ward's Lake, and Elephant Falls. After exploring the Don Bosco Museum's many cultural displays, spend the day shopping at the busy Police Bazaar. Get some rest in Shillong.

Today, drive to Cherrapunji, one of the wettest locations on Earth. See natural treasures such as Eco Park, the stunning Seven Sisters Falls, Mawsmai Cave, and Nohkalikai Falls, which is India's tallest plunge waterfall. Cherrapunji is an ideal location for photographers because of its foggy valleys and hills that curve. Stay at Cherrapunji for the night.

Initiate your journey by visiting Mawlynnong settlement, the cleanest settlement in Asia, where you can cross the renowned Living Root Bridge. After that, travel to Dawki, where you may find the pristine Umngot River, which is ideal for boating and photography. Proceed back to Shillong for relaxation in the evening. Remain in Shillong overnight.
